The Orchestra

There appears to be many misconceptions regarding exactly what a ‘pops orchestra’ really is, and what it performs. Very simply it is an ensemble that performs popular music. It does not bury itself within one genre of music, but rather delves into all spheres of the musical arts. There are works that we all instantly recognise by Bach which are popular, the same is true of Beethoven, Strauss, Berlioz, Elgar, and Sibelius, as popular is also Frank Sinatra, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, David Bowie, Elton John, Michael Jackson…..the list is endless…..Light Classics, Film Scores, West End Shows…..

So who determines what is popular? Well we all do – we all have our own opinions and fondnesses, therefore there is very little, I guess, that is unpopular! However, we intend to listen to our audiences – to your ideas and suggestions and try our hardest to perform your favourites. Understandably not all of our programmes will appeal to everyone, all of the time, but our aim is to play at least one piece per concert that will appeal to each individual – a tall order, or not, the proof of the pudding is in the tasting!
